Major Depression and Dementia are two difficult-to-treat conditions that often have devastating consequences. The quest to find newer and better solutions to these problems is never-ending. Photobiomodulation targeting the brain is a new technology that has been developed and holds great promise as a safe, non-invasive treatment modality.

Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a medical treatment that involves the use of low-level lasers or light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to stimulate cellular function and promote healing. It is also known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT) or cold laser therapy. The name "photobiomodulation" is derived from the concept that light can modulate biological processes at the cellular level. PBM can be used on many parts of the human body, including the brain. Certain wavelengths of light, typically in the red or near-infrared spectrum, can penetrate the skin and even the skull. When absorbed by the cells, the light energy can then trigger various biological responses within the cells, leading to improved cellular function and enhanced tissue repair.
Photobiomodulation (PBM) is actively being studied as a treatment for Major Depression and neurodegenerative disorders such as dementia. Early data suggests that PBM may have neuroprotective and cognitive benefits. The many neuronal functions that are positively affected include improved mitochondrial functioning, reduction in chronic inflammation, improved cerebral blood flow, modulation of oxidative stress, stimulation of neuroplasticity, and improvements in cognition. These benefits collectively have a positive effect on diminishing depression and slowing the progression of dementia.
PBM of the brain is delivered through a helmet that is fashioned with multiple light-emitting diodes (LEDs). This allows close contact and effective penetration of the skull by the red or near-infrared spectrum light waves. The treatment is painless and very comfortable. Most describe it as a warm and gently pulsating sensation of the brain. Treatment protocols take anywhere from 8 to 12 minutes, depending on the specific condition being targeted. Treatment is done 5 days a week for at least 36 treatments. It can be coupled with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) as a powerful neuroelectrophysiologic potentiator.
PBM thus far has proven to be extremely safe and very well tolerated. It is non-invasive and the effects on the brain are profound, but also gentle. Individuals who suffer from Major Depression at any age would benefit from a course of PBM, especially in combination with TMS. Individuals showing early signs of memory problems or having a desire to try and prevent or delay a potential cognitive decline would also benefit greatly from a course of Photobiomodulation, also potentially with TMS targeting memory, along with weekly maintenance.
