How Do You Identify An Opioid Overdose?

0:07I'm also the medical director of the Deloitte Center for Healing, and today we're going

0:10to talk about how to identify if an opioid overdose is actually happening.

0:17The first thing is if you even think you or somebody near you is having an opioid overdose,

0:23call 911 and let them figure it out, because opioid overdoses are dangerous and they're

0:30often lethal.

0:32They're usually lethal if you don't intervene.

0:36Now signs that you look for of an opioid overdose, it starts with if the person, first off, used

0:43opioids or any other drug, and they are now looking too sedated and they're not responding.

0:51If they are no longer conscious and you can't arouse them, you can't wake them up, they

0:55might be in an overdose, especially if you pinch them and they don't respond to the pain,

1:01they might be in an opioid overdose.

1:04If they're breathing really slow, they're barely breathing, they are probably in an

1:09opioid overdose.

1:10If they have stopped breathing, they are definitely and absolutely in an opioid overdose.

1:17If any of those scenarios are happening, you really got to call 911 and get help there

1:22as quickly as possible.

1:24If you have naloxone, either the nasal spray or the shot, administer it right away, but

1:30still call 911 because the naloxone will wear off after a short amount of time and they

1:38will go back into an overdose.

1:41If you're having issues where you have to wonder if you or somebody is overdosing on

1:45opioids, you probably have or they have an opioid problem and you or they need help.
