0:08I'm also the medical director of the Delroy Center for Healing, and today we're going

0:11to talk about what do you do after an opioid overdose?

0:16The first thing is if you're having an overdose with an opioid, call 911 and get help so you

0:20can live to talk about it and then watch this video later.

0:24If you've had an overdose, whether it be accidental, whether you were taking your medication and

0:29somehow even though you took it as prescribed, you overdose or you were trying to get high

0:35and you overdose or you're on street drugs and you overdosed.

0:38If that happened, you need to come to the realization that something is wrong and whatever

0:46conditions led to this overdose, many of those probably still exist and you are at risk of

0:53yet another overdose.

0:56All that means is that you need to get help.

0:59If you had an overdose that is not a small thing, it can happen easily, but not that

1:04easily.

1:05If you've had one, something is really wrong.

1:08If you're prescribed medications and you're taking them as prescribed and you overdose,

1:13something is wrong with the prescription and that needs to be modified.

1:16You got to see your doctor.

1:17You got to tell them what happened, explain how it happened.

1:21Something went wrong somewhere.

1:23A misunderstanding, the wrong dose, a pharmacy error, something, but whatever it was, was

1:28dangerous and it could have killed you.

1:30That has to be fixed and it can usually be fixed.

1:33If you're not taking it for medical reasons, you're taking it for fun, for recreation just

1:38to get high and you overdose, okay, you've crossed a new barrier, a new boundary that

1:43you are now in the range of the danger zone where you can die on any given usage, on any

1:51given day, at any given time.

1:53Your usage is now officially very dangerous and you are at extremely high risk of yet

1:59another overdose.

2:01You need to seek help.

2:02You know, don't ignore it.

2:04If you've had an overdose, this is serious, you know, you need to get help.

2:08This can escalate very easily.

2:10Typically, without help, it will escalate rather quickly and you can easily have another

2:16overdose.

2:17I've had patients have overdoses on consecutive days.

2:21They overdose on a Tuesday, they get resuscitated with Narcan, they go to the hospital, they

2:25leave, and on Wednesday, they overdose again.

2:28They didn't want to, they didn't mean to, but when you have addiction and you have this

2:32incredible driving force that is driving you to use drugs on a scale of behavioral motivation

2:39that you've never seen before in your life and it is just really pushing you to use drugs

2:44and you do these dangerous things, it can push you to do it again despite any logical

2:49reasoning that you have.

2:51It overrides that.

2:52That's why it's addiction.

2:53That's why it's a problem.

2:55That's why it's an epidemic.

2:56That's why so many people die from it.

2:57It's a problem.

2:59So if you've had an overdose, if you didn't know you had a problem before, I can tell

3:03you you have a problem now.

3:05You need to do something about it while you still can.

3:09You know, this is a treatable condition.

3:11You can get help for this.

3:12Get the proper help.

3:14Don't do it on your own.

3:16Seek professional advice.
